88 iPhones?

7/10/2012

I'm already starting to worry about my firstborn going to college, and he's just starting high school this fall.  Am I nuts?  I don't think so.  Check this out!

Look at the savings on getting Pell Grants (I got those when I went to UC Berkeley in the 80's) for only the amount needed for expenses for a Graduate Degree - it's under "FA Comparisons" - I agonized over buying him one iPhone this summer, and he could save enough for 88 more...

That's it, he's getting a job.

When your firstborn gets to college, all he has to do is look around at the grants available, federal or otherwise. My son went to a private college with a huge tuition, and he found grants (not loans) to pay for all four years. In fact, when he graduated, the college wrote us a check for $500. The money is there. All it takes are good grades and a little investigative work. We never knew he was finding grants until the tuition bill came due, and it was marked paid in full. So you're on the right track.

WOW! That's wonderful Caleb! What a responsible young man you raised to find those on his own! We will be looking very carefully if/when he seeks a higher education. He wants to become a middle school music teacher, and play his trumpet. I hope music is still offered in schools when he starts his working life! Thanks for visiting again, Caleb ~ I love your feedback!

Not everybody needs to go to college. Indeed, federal loans have clearly financed many unnecessary educations, and we the taxpayers have footed the bill. Grant monies/scholarships will follow the good students, the ones who ought to be there. Most importantly, it is money that should be invested in a worthwhile education. Degrees in arcane subjects without any appreciable commercial value are the greatest waste of all.

You are spot on, Jack. The rising high school drop-out rate is evidence of the current 'push everyone to college' climate in our public schools. Luckily, I was one of those who received College Pell Grants and Student Loans (which I paid off completely), and used my scientific degree in my career for the first 10 years in the workforce. The critical thinking and creativity it took to graduate University are the real skills I use in my daily life now! Thanks for visiting and commenting, Jack - always a pleasure.
